Description | When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing—not even a smear of blood—to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?
This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…
Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare’s ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.
This book made me internally and externally scream way to many times!
This book series has been sitting in my basement for the past 3 years collecting dust. While it was down there I had no idea what I was missing.
I have heard of the book City of Bones everywhere for years! I mean they made a huge movie (which I even watched), and they have just finished season one of the netflix show!
This book series has been the back of my mind for forever and last week I decided, hey, why not pick it up and take a gander.
Honestly this is such a great book! I loved it all but the length… phew.. that gave me a headache. I feel like Cassandra put as much information as she could into this book. I mean its probably fine and its just me having not read a book this size in over a year.
The writing was amazing and I was able to easily follow along. I find that is pretty hard to achieve in a book this large because you have introduced so many names and phrases that they sometimes get jumbled up, but in this book I was able to understand all the new and quite interesting phrases thrown in there.
I loved how it was set in such a large city like New York. I was able to quite literally visualize what was going on and exactly where they were.
Now the Characters! Wow yes! Cassandra was able to put so much depth and detail into each of the characters. You got to learn a lot about each of the characters and in my opinion there was not a character that you didn’t understand their intentions or their backstory.
Looking though the eyes of Clary Fray and seeing her journey was very interesting and fast paced. Clary had all these things thrown at her very quickly and yet I believe she held herself together quite well for the situation. If this happened to me I would most likely be freaking out 10 times more than she did.
Although I rated this book 3.5/5 I will be definitely reading the 2nd book in the series starting asap!

Thought I would throw in a little discussion down here for those of you who have read the novel.
I find that in a lot of books the author makes the main character oblivious about the best friend who obviously is in love with them. Although this is not a bad thing to be thrown in there it has been done many a times. Even though we have not gotten very far into the love side of the series with Clary we do see a glimpse of what could come. Simon does in my opinion make is quite obvious that he likes her but there is the competitor, Jace Wayland, who is now in the picture.
By around page 350 things started to get really intense and pulled me in even further. The big reveal of the full story and everything adding up had me squealing out loud (pretty sure my family though I was getting murdered). Finding out that Jace isn’t actually Jace Wayland but instead Jace Morgenstern seriously made me question everything I just read. I am not sure about you but I thought that reveal was VERY well executed by Cassandra! I mean that ring idea! Brilliant. Although that was really the best part it made me hate the book aswell because by the middle of the book I start to ship the characters. Realizing that Clary and Jace can’t be together anymore tore my heart out!
I am going to continue to read this series because I am a hopeless romantic and I need to see who everyone ends up with!
I hope you all like my first ever book review on Elegant Chances! I would love to hear your thoughts down in the comments but PLEASE.. No book 2 spoilers haha!
